FAQs - Ten Oaks Project

inquiring minds may want to know…

These FAQs are specific to Camp Lifting Leaves 2021!

What is camp lifting Leaves?

Camp Lifting Leaves is a partner project of the Ten Oaks Project and Indigenous wellbeing and child welfare agencies across Ontario. We have seen a growing need for connection and community building amongst children and youth from 2SLGBTQ+ communities who are involved with an Indigenous wellbeing or child welfare agency, and we are thrilled to offer a camp just for them! The activities and programming offered at Camp Lifting Leaves will be similar to our other camp programs.

what kind of programming is there at Camp lifting Leaves?

The programming and schedule change every year based on what youth are interested in, the skills and interests of our facilitators, and the format the program takes (virtual vs. in-person). Here’s what last year’s virtual program looked like. If we’re able to run in-person, there will also be time spent swimming, kayaking, canoeing, exploring the forest, having campfires, and using the archery range and high ropes courses.

Who can attend?

Camp Lifting Leaves is for children and youth from 2SLGBTQ+ identities, families, and communities who are at least 12 years old and have an active file with an Indigenous wellbeing or child welfare agency. Each agency with children and youth attending camp must provide one chaperone (a staff member or volunteer) for every four youth who are participating and any one-on-one support that is needed. At Camp Lifting Leaves, we also run programming specifically by and for youth who hold other intersecting identities, including spaces for Black and Indigenous people and people of colour, people with disabilities, and neurodivergent folks.

when is it?

If possible, Camp Lifting Leaves will run for two sessions in 2021: in-person from October 15-18 and virtually from November 5-7. Youth are welcome to attend one or both sessions!

is camp lifting leaves in-person or online in 2021?

In 2018 and 2019, Camp Lifting Leaves ran as an overnight camp program at a campsite 40 minutes north of Kingston, ON. Due to the pandemic in 2020, it was offered virtually on Zoom. We will be offering a virtual program this year and hope to also be able to offer an in-person session! We are waiting for direction from the Province of Ontario and public health authorities to determine if we will be allowed to run in-person.

how much does camp lifting leaves cost?

The cost of Camp Lifting Leaves will depend on whether it’s an in-person and/or online program, and how many youth are interested (the more people interested = the more people to share the costs of running the program = the lower the cost per individual). At most, the in-person program will cost $950/camper, but we are attempting to reduce fees, and virtual programming will be significantly less expensive that in-person programming. Funding is available through OCBe as well as the Foundation connected to your agency, if you have one. There is no cost for the chaperones / one-on-one staff support people; their meals and accommodations (in cabins shared with the youth they are chaperoning/supporting) are covered.
