Community Call for Workshop Proposals for Project Acorn
Project Acorn: July 19-22, 2012
Project Acorn is a radical community-building and celebratory space for youth aged 16 to 24 from LGBTQ+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transsexual, Transgender, Two-Spirit, and Queer) identities, communities and families.
For four days, July 19-22, Project Acorn will bring together youth and those working in solidarity with youth to create a safe, empowering, and liberating space, where people can share knowledge, make connections, and build bridges. The retreat is a mixture of workshops, speakers, typical camp activities, and magic that come together to create the most mind-opening and mind-blowing retreat possible. We want to create space to challenge the ways we think about gender and sexuality, and we want to be at the front of this movement!
Project Acorn is a program of the Ten Oaks Project. Its development is lead by a Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) who work relentlessly during the year to put together the program.
This year’s Project Acorn theme is Weaving Our Way, which will explore the many ways we are knit together, and the diversity of ways we journey through our lives, our sexualities, genders, and identities.
We are looking for dynamic workshop proposals that reflect our program framework and that build on this year’s program theme. Workshops will be 90 minutes or 120 minutes and should be interesting and involve participant interaction.
Our priority is to draw on participants, the Youth Advisory Committee, and the ROCs (Roots of our Communities) to present workshops, but we are open to innovative and exciting workshops from our broader communities.
Project Acorn is a unique space and experience, as it works actively to create a safer, anti-oppressive environment. We also hope for workshops that are fun, informative, and interactive. We would invite potential workshop presenters to participate in our ‘How to Run a Workshop’ Workshop coming in May, 2012. The workshop will cover how to build a workshop from an anti-oppressive perspective, how to build the components of a good workshop, and tips and tricks for strong presentation.
