Meet the YAC II

The development of Project Acorn has been informed and guided by a diverse group of dedicated youth volunteers who collectively make up the Youth Advisory Committee or YAC.

Sam

Sam Whittle is in her final year at Carleton University, completing an English degree with a minor in critical sexuality studies. She’s loved her last few years in Ottawa, but is a Newfoundlander at heart (and you can never take the island out of the girl…). Since coming to Ottawa, Sam has been heavily involved in the queer community and with other forms of activism. This year, she is the programming coordinator for the Carleton GLBTQ centre, where she loves planning amazing events, giving interactive workshops, and basking in the general awesomeness of campus queers. She is also on the 2010 Dyke March Planning Committee and a Planned Parenthood volunteer. After her fabulous time at Project Acorn last year, she’s really excited to be a new YAC member this year! Sam generally spends her time being a life-loving hippie, which includes eating vegetarian, dancing all the time, and finding every available occasion to break out her tambourines.

Danielle
Danielle Sutherland is 24 years old and is currently attending Ryerson University and working towards her Master’s in Social Work, which will be done in September (YAY!). Danielle is thrilled to be part of the YAC again this year and is looking forward all the planning and preparation for this year’s Project Acorn, although mostly participating via webcam as she is in Toronto and YAC meetings are in Ottawa :( Danielle is sad that this is the last year she can be on the YAC but she is looking forward to watching Project Acorn grow. In Danielle’s free time she loves napping, listening to Hanson, watching bad reality TV and spending time with friends. Oh and Danielle still LOVES the colour PINK!

Mike

Mike Wiseman is a student at Carleton University in his fifth year, taking Honours Political Science and a Minor in Law. Mike has been actively involved in student and youth activities both on and off campus. He has been an active volunteer with the Carleton University Students' Association (CUSA) as an elected member of student council for the 2008/2009 school year. He has also been the Administrative Coordinator of the Carleton GLBTQ Centre for Sexual and Gender Diversity from 2006 to the present. At GLBTQ he organized events like Campus Pride Week, Trans Day of Remembrance 2008, Gay Organ Donors Rally in 2008, and the Rally in Support of Equal Marriage in 2006. Mike has also partnered with Rainbow Schools to promote safe-spaces in Ottawa district high schools and is also an active volunteer with the Canadian Federation of Students and continues to lobby for accessible education rights.

Tania

Taina Mayberry is a 19 year old student at the University of Ottawa majoring in women’s studies and sociology. She loves vintage clothes, boom boxes, trampolines, and creatures big and small. She finds herself most at peace with her camera, her cat, and her family. As an active volunteer she has been granted opportunities to be: a guest reader at the Mother Tongue Bookstore book launch, a panelist for the 2009 Rainbow Youth Forum, the undergraduate representative for her university's Institute of Women's Studies Council and now a new member of the YAC! She is excited to meet the newest generation of Project Acorn, and become an active participant helping to empower the youth of her community.

Brigette

Brigitte Boudreau - I am taking my sweet time graduating in Criminology as I tend to take time off to travel.
Despite my best effort to travel as much as I possibly can, I will be graduating soon!!! :D
I was happy to randomly learn of about Project Acorn and I got the amazing opportunity to
be a participant last Summer! Hopefully, we can make this year's retreat even better than last year's by
learning from the amazing experience we lived in 2009!
Secret: I also love volunteering. In fact, I am thinking of giving up lucrative work to simply volunteer. Call it a hobby of mine, it seems! My focus in work is the family and its many beautiful definitions, meanings and experiences
