Work at Camp

WorkAtCamp

Camp Ten Oaks is staffed by an amazing team of volunteers. Each staff member receives a $250 honorarium to cover expenses such as time off work and transportation to and from camp.

All staff must participate in a mandatory staff orientation held at camp in June (June 1-3, 2012) and be available to work at camp in August (August 12-18, 2012).

Assistant Director, Staffing

The Assistant Director, Operations role is to uphold and implement the mission, vision and values of the Ten Oaks Project, as well as the policies and procedures relating to Camp Ten Oaks.


The Assistant Director, Operations job includes, but is not limited to:

  • Overseeing daily operations in consultation with the Executive Director and working with Assistant Camp Director, Staffing
  • Overseeing the organizing of operations staff schedules (including time-off)
  • Orienting and supporting camp operations staff in collaboration with the Executive Director
  • Providing leadership and organization to the camp community
  • Supervising and supporting camp staff
  • Coaching staff and campers in emergency safety procedures
  • Conducting daily site inspections and addressing issues around health and safety at camp in a timely manner
  • Consulting on the design of the program

The Assistant Director, Operations has particular oversight and responsibility for all of the maintenance, programming, and operational aspects of camp, with particular oversight for the Camp Life Coordinator, the Kitchen Director, the Health Care Director, the Site and Programming Assistant, and the Waterfront Director. The Assistant Director, Operations therefore has a strong role in ensuring the smooth functioning of these areas and the general maintenance of camp.

The Assistant Director, Operations reports to the Executive Director and will complete other tasks as assigned. It is the expectation that the Assistant Director, Operations be available on a volunteer basis from April to September of the camping season to carry out the duties of the position including assisting with staff hiring. It is a job requirement that the Assistant Director be available on-site for the staff orientation weekend and full-time during the week-long camp session.

Post-camp, the Assistant Director will conduct performance reviews alongside the Executive Director and contribute to a summary report about the camp session.

Camp Life Coordinator

The Camp Life Coordinator is responsible for facilitating the creation and implementation of a vibrant camp program based on the principles of inclusivity, social justice and capacity-building. They will have a strong background in program development and a demonstrated understanding of the needs of children from LGBTQ and non-traditional families, as well as LGBTQ youth.

The job entails responsibilities including, but not limited to:

  • Coordinating round-ups, campfires, theme days, evening activities and special events or guests
  • Acting as a program resource person for camp staff
  • Working to enrich overall camp life by thinking of the 'little things'
  • Consulting on the design of the program schedule

The Camp Life Coordinator reports to the Assistant Camp Director, Operations and will complete other tasks as assigned. It is the expectation that the Camp Life Coordinator be available on a sporadic basis from June to September of the camping season to carry out the duties of the position. It is a job requirement that the Camp Life Coordinator be available on-site for the staff orientation weekend and full-time during the week-long camp session.

 Camp Counsellor

Camp Counsellors are the core of Camp Ten Oaks. Working together with co-counsellors, Camp Counsellors participate with campers in a variety of daily activities as catalysts, leaders, helpers, guides, listeners and, above all, as role models. Each Counsellor will either lead or assist in activities that match their skills during the day and in evening programs, campfires, theme days and other special events and program activities. Camp counsellors will be assigned to work with one of the four cabin groups: JACs (8-9), MACs (10-11), IACS (12-13) or SACs (14-15). Counsellors are expected to respect and support the policies and procedures of Camp Ten Oaks and uphold the Ten Oaks Project mission, vision, and values.

Counsellors report to the Assistant Director, Staffing. Pre-camp, counsellors must participate in a staff orientation weekend and work in conjunction with the Executive Director and Assistant Directors to develop their core programming plans. It is the expectation that Camp Counsellors be available on a volunteer basis from June to August of the camping season to carry out the pre-camp duties of the position. It is a job requirement that Counsellors be available on-site for the staff orientation weekend and full-time during the week-long camp session.

LAC Coordinator

The LAC Coordinator is responsible for the delivery of the Leadership Acorn Program for youth aged 16-17. The successful candidate will have experience in leadership development, and have a demonstrated understanding of the needs of children from LGBTQ and non-traditional families, as well as LGBTQ youth.

The LAC Coordinator's responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Working with LAC campers in achieving skill building, personal growth, and camp programming objectives
  • Managing the day-to-day schedule and responsibilities of LAC campers
  • Working with staff and LAC campers to understand the objectives and role of the program within the camp community
  • Ensuring the creation of a safe, growth-oriented and positive community conducive to the goals of the program and vision of the Ten Oaks Project
  • Providing LAC campers with feedback (formal and informal) and coaching throughout their experience

The LAC Coordinator reports to the Assistant Director, Staffing. It is the expectation that the Camp LAC Coordinator be available on a volunteer basis from May to September of the camping season to carry out the duties of the position. It is a job requirement that the LAC Coordinator be available on-site for the staff orientation weekend and full-time during the week-long camp session.

Pre-camp, the LAC Coordinator will work with the Assistant Director, Staffing and the Executive Director to finalize the leadership program schedule. The LAC Coordinator will also be involved in carrying out the selection of LAC campers.

Site and Programming Assistant

The Site and Programming Assistant is responsible for the set-up of program areas and assisting in the maintenance of the campsite. The successful candidate will have good time management skills, be flexible, and have a willingness to perform basic maintenance duties.

Their responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Facilitating of the set-up of camp program areas prior to each activity block
  • Working with staff to ensure program areas are in good working order and that all safety concerns are immediately brought to the attention of the Assistant Camp Director, Operations
  • Coordinating the daily camp cleanser in consultation with the Assistant Camp Director, Operations
  • Performing basic maintenance and cleaning duties (waste management, assisting with compost, working to resolve maintenance issues under the direction of the Assistant Camp Director, Operations etc.)
  • Acting as additional program and staff support member where needed
  • Assisting kitchen staff in the preparation of meals and cleaning of the dining hall as needed
  • Conducting regular program area, cabin, waterfront, out house, and health hut inspections along with the Assistant Camp Director, Operations

The Site and Programming Assistant will report to the Assistant Director, Operations and will complete other tasks as assigned. It is the expectation that the Site and Programming Assistant be available on a volunteer basis from June to August of the camping season to carry out the duties of the position. It is a job requirement that the Site and Programming Assistant be available on-site for the staff orientation weekend and full-time during the week-long camp session.

Waterfront Director

The Waterfront Director oversees all aquatic activities and staff, campers, equipment and facilities that are in the waterfront area. The successful candidate will have at least 250 hours of guarding experience, be currently registered with the National Lifesaving Society, be certified in Standard First Aid and Level 'C' CPR and have experience in waterfront procedures. Waterfront certifications will be considered assets.

The Waterfront Director's job includes, but is not limited to:

  • Supervising and training waterfront staff
  • Acting as head guard during instructional and general swims
  • Enforcing appropriate waterfront rules and emergency procedures
  • Supervising the use of canoes and kayaks
  • Overseeing the instruction of campers in the safe use of the equipment and proper techniques for paddling, steering, and righting
  • Conducting and monitoring swim testing of all campers and staff
  • Providing general program support where appropriate

The Waterfront Director reports to the Assistant Director, Operations. It is the expectation that the Waterfront Director be available on a volunteer basis from May to September of the camping season to carry out the duties of the position. It is a job requirement that the Waterfront Director be available on-site for the staff orientation weekend and full-time during the week-long camp session.

Post-camp the Waterfront Director will complete an end of summer review of waterfront protocol with recommendations for the next camping season.

Waterfront Staff

Waterfront Staff assist the Waterfront Director with all aquatic activities. Successful candidates will be registered with the National Lifesaving Society, be certified in Standard First Aid and Level 'C' CPR and have at least one year of related experience. Waterfront certifications will be considered assets.

Waterfront Staff responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Guarding and facilitating instruction where required during swim times
  • Maintenance and up-keep of the waterfront area
  • Instructing campers in the safe use of the equipment and proper techniques for paddling, steering, and righting canoes and kayaks
  • Working with campers in other programming and camper group support capacities as required

Waterfront Staff report to the Waterfront Director and will complete other tasks as assigned. It is the expectation that Waterfront Staff be available on a volunteer basis from June to August of the camping season to carry out the duties of the position. It is a job requirement that the Waterfront Staff be available on-site for the staff orientation weekend and full-time during the week-long camp session.

Kitchen Director

The Kitchen Director coordinates all food preparation and food service for camp. The successful candidate will have related kitchen experience, be well versed in the Canada Food Guide, and have demonstrated experience in accommodating special and diverse dietary needs.

The Kitchen Director's responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Menu planning in accordance with healthy eating guidelines and dietary needs of the camp community
  • Ordering and purchasing all food required materials for meals
  • Food storage, preparation and cooking in accordance with Ontario Camping Association Guidelines
  • Supervising meal preparation and serving
  • Supporting the work and training of kitchen staff
  • Overseeing kitchen cleaning and maintenance, including dishes, in compliance with health and safety guidelines
  • Receiving food on-site prior to the commencement of the camp session

The Kitchen Director reports to the Assistant Director, Operations. It is the expectation that the Kitchen Director be available on a volunteer basis from May to September of the camping season to carry out the duties of the position. It is a job requirement that the Kitchen Director be available on-site for the staff orientation weekend and full-time during the week-long camp session.

Pre-camp, the Kitchen Director will work with the Assistant Camp Director, Operations to plan a healthy and fun menu for campers and staff that is sensitive to personal dietary restrictions (vegetarian, vegan, religious, food allergies, etc.) and that is within the assigned budget.

Post-camp, the Kitchen Director will provide the Assistant Camp Director, Operations with input into evaluations of Kitchen Staff and complete an end of summer review with recommendations for the next camping season.

Kitchen Staff

Kitchen Staff work with the Kitchen Director to assist in food preparation and food service at camp. Successful candidates will have related experience and have a demonstrated understanding of health and safety guidelines in a kitchen setting.

Kitchen Staff responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Meal preparation
  • Cooking
  • Keeping the kitchen clean and orderly in accordance with health guidelines

Kitchen Staff report directly to the Kitchen Director. It is the expectation that Kitchen Staff be available on a volunteer basis from June to September of the camping season to carry out the duties of the position. It is a job requirement that the Kitchen Staff be available on-site for the staff orientation weekend and full-time during the week-long camp session.

Health Care Director

The Health Care Director is responsible for the coordination of and response to the daily health care needs of the camp community. The successful candidate will at minimum be certified in Standard First Aid and Level 'C' CPR, will be a practitioner or advanced level student in a health care field, have a demonstrated understanding of the needs of children from LGBTQ and non-traditional families, as well as LGBTQ youth, and be grounded in diversity in their professional practice.

The Health Care Director's responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Dispensing medication and administering first aid
  • Collecting and administering health care information
  • Keeping records of treatment and medication for both campers and staff
  • Maintaining an inventory of supplies and equipment
  • Contacting campers' parents regarding medical issues
  • Working to maintain health and safety standards in all aspects of camp programming
  • Providing health and wellness education to the camp community (e.g. sun safety, hand washing, etc.)
  • Overseeing the Camper Specialist

The Health Care Director reports to the Assistant Camp Director, Operations. It is the expectation that the Health Care Director be available on a volunteer basis from May to September of the camping season to carry out the duties of the position. It is a job requirement that the Health Care Director be available on-site for the staff orientation weekend and full-time during the week-long camp session.

Pre-camp, the Health Care Director will work with the Assistant Camp Director, Operations to implement health care procedures and coordinate the Health Hut. The Health Care Director must also participate in the staff orientation weekend.

Post-camp, the Health Care Director will complete an end of summer review with recommendations for the next camping season.

Floater Extraordinaire

Our camp floaters need to be able to do a little bit of everything and could be in seven different places in a day, providing coverage and support to camp counselors and other staff areas as needed. Floaters also assist with program planning, set-up and delivery. In addition, floaters work with counsellors and campers and participate in a variety of daily activities as catalysts, leaders, helpers, guides, listeners and, above all, as role models. Each floater will either lead or assist in activities that match their skills during the day.

Floaters may be assigned to replace staff members unable to attend camp at the last minute or unable to stay throughout the duration of the program.

Floaters report to the Executive Director. It is the expectation that floaters be available on a volunteer basis from June to August of the camping season to carry out the pre-camp duties of the position. It is a job requirement that floaters be available on-site for the staff orientation weekend and full-time during the week-long camp session.

Camper Specialist

The Camper Specialist is responsible for supporting counsellors in meeting the needs of their campers. They will have a demonstrated understanding of the needs of children from LGBTQ and non-traditional families, as well as LGBTQ youth. The Camper Specialist will have the ability to communicate with and provide guidance to counsellors, as well as a strong background in assessing and managing children and youth with behavioural and emotional needs.

The job entails responsibilities including, but not limited to:

  • Supporting the staff team in working with campers with behavioural and/or emotional needs and ensuring that individual protocols are followed
  • Ensuring that identified needs of campers are being addressed
  • Being available during call-in hours to liaise with parents and/or guardians
  • Providing support and guidance to staff in the event of camper disclosures or crises
  • Assisting the Health Care Director as appropriate in providing camper care

The Camper Specialist reports to the Assistant Director, Staffing and has a working relationship with the Health Care Director. It is the expectation that the Camper Specialist be available on a volunteer basis from May to September of the camping season to define and carry out the duties of the position. It is a job requirement that the Camper Specialist be available on-site for the staff orientation weekend and full-time during the week-long camp session.

Pre-camp, the Camper Specialist will work with the Health Care Director and Assistant Camp Director, Staffing to develop the position. Post-camp, the Camper Specialist will complete an end of summer review with recommendations for the next camping season.
