Still Have Questions? (FAQ’s)
HOW DID OAK GROVE FAMILY CAMP GET STARTED?
The Ten Oaks Project was co-founded by Holly and Julia Wagg in April of 2004. Holly and Julia noticed a huge gap in services for the children and youth of the LGBTQ+ community (there was nothing in Ottawa at the time) and decided to take action. The first camp program, Camp Ten Oaks, opened its doors in 2005 for children and youth aged 8-17.
In 2017, Ten Oaks decided to expand it programming to start a family camp. The idea sprung from feedback from our communities and a lack of such an outdoor summer camp in Ontario at that time. The program was modeled with similar values to that of Camp Ten Oaks but with more of an emphasis on building communities for the families who would attend camp.
WHERE DID THE NAME “TEN OAKS PROJECT AND “OAK GROVE FAMILY CAMP” GET STARTED?
When conducting a community-wide survey between April and August of 2004 to see if there was a need for a camp program for the LGBTQ+ community, the name Ten Oaks Project was whipped up: TEN (a number that plays with the idea that 1 in 10 people are LGBTQ+)+ OAKS (a strong tree that hints at the idea of camp and outdoors) + PROJECT (so it made sense for the organization to run programming outside of camp).
Since Oak Grove Family Camp is a program of the Ten Oaks Project, it was decided that we would run a name choosing competition where we would invite our community member to submit ideas and a panel will choose the best submission while keeping with our tree and/or number theme! We received some amazing suggestions, and in the end, Family Camp was officially named Oak Grove Family Camp!
I’M NOT SURE IF I FALL UNDER THE CATEGORY OF SOMEONE FROM THE LGBTQ+ FAMILIES AND IDENTITIES, CAN I STILL ATTEND CAMP?
Due to limited space, camp is open to anyone who identifies as LGBTQ+ or is from an LGBTQ+ family and have a child or youth aged 17 or under in their care. If you are unsure, please contact our Programs Manager, Parnian, at firstname.lastname@example.org and she can help you out.
I DON’T HAVE ANY KIDS; CAN I STILL COME TO OAK GROVE FAMILY CAMP?
Unfortunately, due to limited space and resources, we are limiting oak grove family camp to folks who have a child or youth under the age of 17 in their care.
IS THERE ANY OTHER CAMP LIKE OAK GROVE FAMILY CAMP?
Not that we know of at this moment. The Sherbourne Health Centre is Toronto had done day and overnight LGBTQ+ family camps before, but they do not run this program anymore.
I DON’T HAVE A CAR OR ANY WAY TO GET TO CAMP, IS THERE transportation PROVIDED?
Unfortunately, due to limited funds, we are unable to provide transportation to and from camp. This is something that has been discussed at length, and is a part of our ongoing dialogue around accessibility; we hope to one day be able to provide transportation.
IS THERE CHILDCARE PROVIDED AT CAMP?
Yes! We have registered ECE volunteers at camp who will be providing childcare at designated times. Make sure to refer to your schedule to ensure which activity includes childcare!
