Strategic Plan 2008-2011
Launching the New
Plan
This past
spring, the Ten Oaks Project launched a community-wide
consultation to gather feedback and input to shape the future
direction of the organization. While the official
release of the new strategic plan will take place at our
upcoming Annual General Meeting, it was passed by our Board of
Directors in October and we'd like to take the opportunity to
share it with you now.
New Mission, Vision
and Values As
part of the strategic planning process, we also took the
opportunity to update our mission, vision and values.
Today, we're re-introducing these guiding principles that
ground our work to
you. Our Mission
The
Ten Oaks Project engages and connects children and youth from
LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, two-spirit, queer)
communities through programs and activities rooted in
play.
Our Vision
The Ten Oaks Project is a leader in meeting the needs of
children and youth in LGBTQ families and LGBTQ youth.
Our work is inspired by camp and grounded in social justice as
we strive to create safer spaces and grow positive peer
networks for all children and youth.

Camp Ten
Oaks In the
News This fall, camp staffer Mason,
wrote an article for the Trent University newspaper on his
experiences at Camp Ten Oaks. Check it out Under the Old Oak
Tree.
Ontario
Camping
Association This fall, Camp Ten Oaks received
its accreditation from the Ontario Camping
Association
(OCA).
To be accredited by the OCA, camps
have to complete a lengthy process that demonstrate its
adherence to more than 400 OCA-developed standards that cover
all areas of a camp's operation, such as health care, food
service, leadership, programs, transportation and
campsite. While every OCA camp must meet
all relevant government regulations, in many cases OCA
standards exceed existing regulations. Where no government
regulations exist, OCA standards describe "best camp
practices" as established by professionals in the camping
industry. Initial accreditation is
achieved after a three-year process and is maintained by
visits from standards officers every four years
thereafter.

Take Part in a Research Study
Hi! My name is Lisa White,
and I'm a lesbian mom and student of Counselling Psychology at
the University of Toronto. Along with my supervisor,
Professor Margaret Schneider, I am currently looking for
people to take part in a study who are between the ages of 12
and 19 and have lesbian or gay parents. Each person who
participates will be paid for their help. If you are
under 16 and would like to take part, please have a parent
contact me at liwhite@oise.utoronto.ca, or by phone at 416.792.3169, so
they can let me know it's okay with them if you take
part. If you are 16 and over, you can contact me
directly yourself. I look forward to hearing from
you!
Around the Rainbow
Family Chronicle Days
Share your experience of growing
up in a diverse family through two unique opportunities.
First, on November 24 bring your family to participate
in a collaborative art piece and allow your children to
celebrate the uniqueness of your family. This will be held at
Family Services Ottawa from 9:30 to 11:20
am.
Second,
did you grow up in a GLBTTQ family? If so, would you like to
take part in a chronicle of those experiences by taking part
in a brief discussion? Your insights would be used to help the
Around the Rainbow project contribute to the spirit of the
community and hopefully future work to support Rainbow
Families.
If you are interested in either of these
events, please contact Marnie Potter, Community Developer at
Family Services Ottawa at mpotter@familyservicesottawa.org or 613.725.3601, ext 126.
Also, you can visit our website at www.around-therainbow.com.
