Project Acorn
Leadership Retreat for Youth from LGBTQ Communities

Project Acorn

The Ten Oaks Project's new youth leadership program, Project Acorn, is now accepting applications for Youth Participants and Adult Leaders (Volunteer Staff).

Over four days (July 23-26) at a sleep-away retreat in Ottawa, Project Acorn will allow youth to celebrate the uniqueness of our communities, while building knowledge and capacity, ultimately providing the tools and confidence to help them make the change they want to see, in ways most consistent with who they are.

The application deadline for both Youth Participants and Adult Leaders (Volunteer Staff) is May 18, 2009.

Check out the Project Acorn page on our website for all the details, including more information about Project Acorn and links to the application forms.

Here's what two of our YAC (Youth Advisory Committee) members have to say about Project Acorn:

Curtis Laurin
Curtis Laurin"Hi! My name's Curtis and I can't wait for camp!

Like many, I thrive off of any opportunity to be with our loving, caring, and fun community. I'm looking forward to testing the boundaries of my own comfort zone, building upon my own leadership abilities, and growing as a member of the community. I think out of all the workshops we plan to offer, I'm most looking forward to the GLBTTQ History workshop. There's no questioning this leadership retreat is, plain and simple, going to be a blast!

Meeting new people and creating new friendships, being inspired to create change and take a role in the community, all while taking part in fun camp activities, is what Project Acorn is all about. This retreat has been in the works for such a long time, and with the hard work of many, it's really cool to see it finally all come together. Not only will Project Acorn be the highlight of my summer, but I'm confident it will be that for many other youth as well. See you in July!"

Evelyn O'Driscoll
Evelyn"Project Acorn excites me for a multitude of reasons. Mostly, it excites me because I love to interact with people of similar values to my own, whether they are youth or adults. Project Acorn basically signifies a space where I can be myself and talk about my family situation without fear of being judged. As a straight youth from an LGBTQ family, I sometimes find myself feeling excluded from the LGBTQ community as a whole. Being involved with Project Acorn, I have never felt anything but included and welcomed for who I am. I hope that other youth from a variety of backgrounds are fortunate enough to share the same experiences that I have had with Project Acorn."
