Families in Transition
The Ten Oaks Project is excited to announce a new partnership with Central Toronto Youth Services! We will be working together to offer a Families in Transition group for parents and caregivers of trans, gender diverse, and gender-questioning youth in Ottawa and surrounding areas, in addition to Toronto!
What is families in transition?
The FIT Program is a 10-week group that meets once per week for 2 hours over zoom. The group provides parents with information about gender identity and trans issues, strategies for improving communication and connection with trans/gender questioning young people, and general support in parenting a trans/gender-questioning youth. This group is not psychotherapy, it is educational and not meant to treat any mental health issues.
This FIT group is open to parents of trans/non-binary/gender-questioning youth in middle and high school, who are new to supporting their child’s gender identity or expression. Exceptions may be possible for parents and caregivers of youth outside this age range if the group is a good fit. If there is interest, our next group in the spring of 2021 may include parents and caregivers of younger trans and gender diverse children and youth.
This group will take place on Thursday evenings from 6-8 PM on zoom between January 21, 2021 and March 25, 2021. There will be a separate group for the youth that runs on a different evening. If your young person doesn’t want to attend or isn’t able, you (and any co-parents) can still attend the parent group. We ask that participants commit to coming to all the sessions.
how can I register?
Ten Oaks’ intake process will prioritize families in Ottawa and surrounding rural areas. Parents and caregivers in Toronto can contact Briar Rose at Central Toronto Youth Services at BriarRose.Thom@ctys.org for information about this and other FIT programs based in Toronto.
If you are a parent or caregiver interested in participating in or learning more about this program, please fill out the application form below with some brief information about yourself and any co-parents or caregivers who are interested in attending the group with you. The form should take approximately 3 to 5 minutes to complete.
When we receive your application we will contact you to set up an intake phone call. If your youth is interested in attending the youth group, we will contact them directly after your intake is complete.
